What is Labradorite

Labradorite is a fascinating and captivating mineral belonging to the feldspar family. Known for its stunning play of color, often referred to as labradorescence, labradorite exhibits an array of brilliant hues including blues, greens, yellows, and reds. This optical phenomenon occurs due to the interference of light within the stone's internal structure, creating a breathtaking and ever-changing display that has enchanted both gem enthusiasts and spiritual seekers alike.

Labradorite was first discovered in 1770 by Moravian missionaries on the Isle of Paul, near Nain, Labrador, in Canada, hence its name. This initial discovery unveiled the stone's remarkable beauty and potential, leading to its inclusion in various jewelry and decorative items.

Today, labradorite is sourced from several locations around the world, with some of the finest specimens coming from Madagascar, Finland, and Canada. The mining process involves extracting the stone from large rock formations, often in remote and rugged areas. In Madagascar, for instance, labradorite is mined in the southern regions, where miners carefully extract the rough stones from the earth. The stones are then transported to processing facilities where they are cut and polished to reveal their stunning colors.

Labradorite is steeped in mystical beliefs and has long been revered by various cultures for its purported metaphysical properties. Often called the "Stone of Magic," labradorite is believed to awaken one's innate magical abilities and enhance psychic powers. It is thought to be a powerful protector, creating a shield for the aura and strengthening natural energies from within.  For example, in Inuit mythology, labradorite is believed to have fallen from the frozen fire of the Aurora Borealis. According to legend, an Inuit warrior struck the stone with his spear, releasing the northern lights trapped within it.
